About Sid Valley Memory Café

The word most commonly used by carers to describe the Memory Cafe is ‘lifeline’. Living with dementia can be tough for them as well as those they care for.

Apart from the challenges of the dementia itself, many people experience isolation and loneliness. Isolation is deadly: the inability to connect regularly with the people, places and activities that give our lives meaning gradually shuts us down. Many people describe a shrinking of their social life and a sense of separation from family and friends who have sustained them all their lives.

Memory Cafes are informal social places where you can go for advice, support and friendship. The social aspect is the most important. It gives a chance to chat with friends over tea biscuits and share what is going on for you with others in a similar situation. Studies have shown that by sharing information and knowledge carers are better able to understand and support the person who is undergoing memory problems.

The Sid Valley Memory Cafe opened in 2010 and our team has a wealth of experience and knowledge about memory problems and dementia and the support available. Members of our local Community Health team also call into the meetings and are available for confidential professional advice. Most importantly, though, we offer a place where people living with dementia can join in a range of beneficial and enjoyable activities.

Quality assured

On September 10th  2024 our memory cafe was awarded the Devon Memory Cafe Consortium’s Quality Assurance Mark. This is a local initiative developed by the community and voluntary service organisations in Teignbridge, South Hams and Torbay and funded by the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. It is open to memory cafes in Devon which provide support, services and activities to improve the health and wellbeing of people in our communities.

The Memory Cafe Quality Assurance Scheme ensures that the policies and practices that we apply result in safe, caring, effective and responsive services.

The scheme helps build confidence and awareness among health professionals and the public about the range and quality of health and wellbeing activities and services that can you can find through memory cafes.

Broader support

Since 2014, the Memory Cafe has supported the funding, through Dementia UK, of Admiral nurses. These are NHS nurses who are additionally trained in the care and support of people with dementia and their families. Sid Valley families have been fortunate enough to have access to an Admiral nurse since 2017.

The Admiral Nurse works holistically, attending to the physical and mental health needs of both the carer and the person with dementia.  In order to access this service, a referral will need to be made by your GP.

Who is it for?

Sid Valley Memory Café is a friendly, social meeting place for people with all forms of memory problems and their families and friends.

When and where?

The Memory Cafe meets every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm to 3.45pm. There are music and exercise sessions plus quizzes, raffles, carpet bowls and quoits. There is also regular entertainment from visiting musicians and speakers – and there is always tea and biscuits.

The cafe also runs two regular weekly befriending groups for carers and the people they care for that have sociable talk and laughter at the heart of them.

On Tuesday mornings at 10.30 to 11.30 there is coffee (or tea) at The Fort Cafe on Sidmouth Esplanade overlooking the sea. There is no charge.

On Friday mornings, from 10.15 to 11.30, Sidmouth Rotary Club hosts drinks for Memory Cafe members at The Anchor Inn in Sidmouth town centre. There is a small charge of £1 per person.

Who runs it?

Sid Valley Memory Café is run by a committed team of volunteers, many of whom have specific experience and knowledge of caring for people with dementia. Members of our local community health team also call into the meetings and are available for confidential professional advice.

As it is a Sidmouth community project, the café is supported by many local organisations including The Rotary Clubs of Sidmouth and Sid Valley, and The Inner Wheel Club of Sidmouth. We are grateful to all our benefactors and volunteers for all their support.

Sid Valley Memory Cafe is also a member of Devon Memory Cafe Consortium, a network that provides a wealth of further, in depth, information about living with dementia and the memory cafe movement. You can find it here

How much does it cost?

We do not charge people to join our Memory Café, as we are funded through personal donations, grants and other fundraising activities.

Current activities

Meaningful and enjoyable activities help people to live well with dementia. Whilst they don’t necessarily slow the progression of dementia, they do improve your loved one’s quality of life – and encourage a ‘closeness’ and emotional connection between you. What is more, relatively short periods of shared activity and social interaction help to improve behavioural symptoms, and lessen agitation.

According to recent research more than two-thirds of people with dementia have stopped doing the things they used to due to a lack of confidence. As well as activities at the Memory Café, we organise trips out – usually with a reminiscence theme. This enables people living with dementia to visit places they could never go to on their own, and reap the benefits of reminiscing and remembering.

We also have a walking group for more mobile members, providing opportunities to walk and talk in beautiful places.
